Although it was built in the 13th century as a residence-fortress for the Angevin rulers, who had made Naples the new capital of their kingdom in Southern Italy, the Castle largely owes its appearance to King Alfonso of Aragon, who conquered the castle and the city. in the 15th century. Within its walls there are the remains of a Roman villa, fragments of frescoes by Giotto and the famous Sala dei Baroni, where a court tragedy took place.
