OPLONTIS - Private tour
INFO
Also known by the name of Villa di Poppea, referring to the second wife of Emperor Nero, this luxurious residence is located in the ancient town of Oplontis, between Pompeii and Herculaneum, today Torre Annunziata. It was built in a panoramic position towards the middle of the 1st century. BC and enlarged in the imperial age. Still partially buried by lapilli and volcanic ashes from the eruption of 79 AD, it amazes for the grandeur of its rooms decorated with splendid frescoes. Here the Roman otium made use of large arcaded gardens, spas and a private swimming pool of about 60 m. of length. The villa, rediscovered during the Bourbon period, was uninhabited at the time of the eruption, as evidenced by the traces of the renovation works and the findings of materials piled on the floors.
